My question is that is it possible to create a tree structure in the chart of accounts. Many people need this feature and it exists in many accounting modules in the major ERP systems. Unfortunately, I cannot find this feature in Odoo. For example, if I create a sub-account under a main account, I want this to be represented in a hierarchy (tree structure).

The tree hierarchy structure is already in odoo 8 version for COA, In odoo v9 which is not available and moved this feature in the enterprise edition, which is extended functionality of tree hierarchy.
If you need to Implement these feature it is quite possible and needs to do some customizations. Like changing the current action to view type and make a parent-child relation. Please refer this question
Hierarchy structure of COA is available now in odoo 13 by using your account coding structure it will be fit but not the same as the tree account structure but also there is some addons in odoo apps you can try if you need some thing similer .
