Hi All,

I'm running a seafood processing business. Daily we will process the whole fish into several parts to sell ie. Fillet, Head, Steak etc.

How do I use the manufacturing module to handle this process?

One whole fish(KG) -- Process ---> Fillet(Ea), Head(Ea), Steak(Ea), Fin(KG), Bone(KG) etc.

Hi Sunny Sheth,

Can we bring cost in by-products through some tweak, or any module is there in which we can create multiple finished goods from one product?

HI Pinak,

Can you please provide full business case for your solution that is more appreciate.

Thanks

Hi Jun Jie Wang,

you can use Odoo's Manufacturing process with some tweaks as below:

Key Adjustments:

  1. Add Wastage as a By-product:
    • Include a product called Wastage (UoM: KG) as a by-product in the Bill of Materials (BoM).
  2. Adjust By-product Quantities During MO:
    • Allow flexibility in by-product quantities during the processing to account for variability (e.g., damaged fins or heads).

1. Enable Editable By-products in MO

  • Go to Manufacturing > Configuration > Settings.
  • Enable By-products under the Manufacturing settings.
  • Ensure Allow Component Adjustments is enabled to modify components and by-products during an MO.

2. Update the Bill of Materials (BoM)

  • Go to Manufacturing > Products > Bill of Materials.
  • Create or update the BoM for the Whole Fish:
    • Product: Whole Fish.
    • BoM Type: Manufacture this product.
    • Components: None (as you’re processing the whole fish directly).
    • By-products:
      • Fillet (Ea).
      • Head (Ea).
      • Steak (Ea).
      • Fin (KG).
      • Bone (KG).
      • Wastage (KG).

3. Create Manufacturing Orders

  • Go to Manufacturing > Operations > Manufacturing Orders.
  • Create a new MO:
    • Product: Whole Fish.
    • Quantity: Specify the amount to process (e.g., 10 KG).
  • Confirm the MO.

4. Adjust Output Quantities During MO

  • Open the Manufacturing Order and click Edit.
  • Modify the quantities of the by-products based on actual yields:
    • Example: If 2 heads are damaged, reduce the Head count and add that weight to Wastage (KG).
  • Record wastage separately to ensure accurate stock updates.

5. Validate and Complete

  • Once adjustments are made, validate and complete the MO.
  • The system will:
    • Deduct the Whole Fish from stock.
    • Add by-products and wastage to their respective inventory locations.

6. Inventory Location for Wastage

  • Create a separate location for Wastage if needed:
    • Go to Inventory > Configuration > Locations and create a new location (e.g., "Scrap/Wastage").
    • Assign the Wastage product to this location.

7. Reporting and Cost Tracking

  • Use Inventory Reports to analyze:
    • Quantities of by-products produced.
    • Amount of wastage generated.
  • Analyze manufacturing costs under Manufacturing > Reporting > Cost Analysis.

Benefits of This Approach

  • Flexible Outputs: Adjust by-product quantities during the MO to match real-world processing outcomes.
  • Wastage Tracking: Keep wastage accounted for in both inventory and reports.
  • Ease of Use: Simplifies the process while maintaining detailed records of production and losses.

Hi Sunny Sheth,
Step 3: Create MO and specify the qty of Whole Fish eg. 10kg.

The system will take as 10kg of whole fish will be produced upon MO completion. ie. Inventory of Whole Fish + 10kg instead of deduction.

Hi Jun Jie Wang,

Below you can find the adjustment of that entire fish.
----

Adjusting the Setup to Deduct Whole Fish
1. Set Whole Fish as a Component, Not the Main Product
Go to Manufacturing > Products > Bill of Materials.
Open the Bill of Materials (BoM) for Whole Fish.

Modify the BoM:

Main Product:
Set one of the by-products as the output (e.g., Fillet, or a placeholder product like "Processed Fish").

Components:
Add Whole Fish as a component (input) with its required quantity (e.g., 10 KG).

Example:

Main Product: Processed Fish (or any by-product you want as the "output").

Components:

Whole Fish: 10 KG.

By-products:

Fillet: 2 units.
Head: 1 unit.
Steak: 5 units.
Bone: 1 KG.
Fin: 0.5 KG.
Wastage: (Variable, if needed).

2. Create the MO

Go to Manufacturing > Operations > Manufacturing Orders.
Create a new MO:
Product: Processed Fish (or your chosen placeholder/by-product).
Quantity: Specify the output quantity (e.g., 10 processed units or equivalent based on your configuration).

3. Process the MO
When you confirm the MO, the system will:
Deduct the specified amount of Whole Fish (input) from inventory.
Add the by-products (Fillet, Head, Steak, etc.) to inventory as per the BoM configuration.

4. Optional: Track Only By-products

If you do not need a placeholder product like "Processed Fish":
Simply set up the MO with By-products only.
Skip specifying any output product and focus entirely on deducting Whole Fish and adding the by-products.

Why This Works In Odoo:

- The Main Product of an MO is treated as the item to be produced (added to inventory).
- Components are treated as materials to be consumed (deducted from inventory).
- By shifting Whole Fish to the component list and using a placeholder or one of the by-products as the main product, the system behaves as intended: consuming Whole Fish and producing by-products.

Hi Sunny Sheth,

Seems like your solution might work but just i cannot locate the by-products in my locations. The qty of by-products are not fixed as some head or fin might be damaged and not sellable and I will lump those as wastage(KG)

Enable the option from settings > manufacturing > operations section

Hi Jun Jie Wang,

Please review my updated answer.

Thanks

You should use Unbuild Orders manufacturing feature for your business.

This will dismantle your product into different components/parts based on the configured BOM.

I will need to trial with more test cases.

Hi Sudhir Arya,

I cannot seems to get the BOM for unbuild orders. Do i need kits?
