I have external contacts who bring me clients and I would like to assign them as salespeople and have them benefit from a commission plan. But I can't figure out how to assign them the "salesperson" role and have them appear in the salespeople list.

Hello,
To assign the role of a salesperson to a partner contact in Odoo, you need to first create them as an internal user and assign them the necessary sales access rights. Salespeople only appear in the dropdown list if they are internal users (not external partners). Once set as a user, they can be linked to commission plans.

If you don't want to assign a full license, you can give them **portal access** while still providing sales access via the user settings.

You would need them to be set-up as partners. Ensure to install reseller modules to activate this functionality

I installed the reseller module; it activates automatically, since there's a "Partner Assignment" tab in the contact file. But it doesn't allow you to assign them as a salesperson for a contact or anything else, only for an opportunity.
My need is to assign an external salesperson to the contacts assigned to them so that they receive commissions on their purchases.

That is correct salesperson field is limited to Internal users and I would tend to believe it is for a good reasons.

A CRM opportunity can be assigned to a partner (Assigned Partner Tab). A customer might have multiple opportunities assigned to different partner and or salesperson. It is more flexible to assign partner to opportunity rather than a contact. If needed a partner can be set as a default for a customer while creating new opportunity.

In the sales App, the field Referer is the partner and the related commision plans can be applied.

If the above are limiting in your case, you could follow the instructions in the below post. While the post is a bit dated and refers to V13, it might probably work for the latest versions as well.

To assign external contacts as salespeople in Odoo, create them as internal users with the Sales access rights. Only internal users appear in the salesperson dropdown and can be linked to commission plans.

Okay, I created a user and I can only give him sales rights. This sent him an email to log in to the account, but I don't want him to have an additional license, just portal access. We can only have one or the other, not both, how do I do this?
