When I display a binary field in a form, the widgets allows both uploading and downloading a file. Is there a magical attribute I can set on the view to hide the updload or download button in order to control the information flow and unclutter the display?

You can refer "base" and "document" module with object "ir.attachment" and field "datas" of OpenERP.
