Hello Odoo Community,

We are using Odoo 18 Online and need to set up automatic serial number sequencing while generating serial numbers through Manufacturing Orders.

Current System Behavior :

  • Serial numbers are generated per product, restarting the sequence for each product.

Example:

  • MO0001 - Product A (10 units) → Serial Numbers: SN001 - SN010
  • MO0001 - Product A (10 units) → Serial Numbers: SN011 - SN019
  • MO0002 - Product B (5 units) → Serial Numbers: SN001 - SN005 (Restarting from SN001)

Expected requirement : 

  • Serial numbers should be generated continuously across all products without restarting.

Example:

  • MO0001 - Product A (10 units) → Serial Numbers: SN001 - SN010
  • MO0002 - Product A (10 units) → Serial Numbers: SN011 - SN020
  • MO0003 - Product B (5 units) → Serial Numbers: SN021 - SN025

We are looking for solutions to implement this continuous sequencing across all products. Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Odoo 18.0 standard includes a "Serial Numbers" sequence.

Verify you have it by activating Developer Mode and visiting Settings --> Technical --> Sequences & Identifiers ->  Sequences.

If present, Odoo uses this each time it is asked to generate a Serial Number, irrespetive of the Product (via the Manufacturing Order or via the Shop Floor App).

If you delete/archive this sequence, you are required to define the first Serial Number (or sequence) for each Product and then Odoo will suggest the next number in the sequence

You will see the error "Please set the first Serial Number or a default sequence" if you try to ask Odoo to generate a Serial Number and the Serial Numbers sequence is missing.

Your "Expected requirement" are met out of the box, unless you have customized Odoo or are manually defining or importing Serial Numbers.

    • Click on Create to define a new sequence.​
    • Assign a descriptive Name (e.g., "Global Serial Numbers").​

    • Set Number Increment to 1 to ensure sequential numbering.​

    • Set the Lot/Serial Number Generation method to Global to apply the newly created sequence across all products.​

For more advanced control over serial number sequencing, consider integrating third-party modules:​

  • Product Lot Sequence Module:
    • This module allows defining lot sequences directly from the product, offering flexibility in sequence management.
