I am currently exploring the use of odoo v10 for a auto spare parts business and was wondering what would be the best practice in setting up products that are the same part number but can come from different manufacturers in different quality and hence would have a different cost and price.

Is it a must that separate products codes be created, or does odoo have any feature that would allow one products code to be created but have the quantity, and price separate depending on the manufacturer?

Hi Orette,

You can use the concept of the Product Variants in this case. Also you can use the Internal reference to distinguish each products.

You can create a product and can add the attribute such as quality, manufacturer etc and then you can set the price for each of the product variant. From this link you will get idea about how to set the product variants,

From looking into a ferrari parts business, I did get the following findings:

- There are different car manufacturers (of course)

- Car manufacturers can manufacture spare parts themselves and/or buy them from one or several OEM manufacturers

- Car manufacturers can assign part numbers to parts or can use the OEM part number or both, but car manufacturers can also use different part numbers for exactly the same part, as it is the case for example at Ferrari

- a part can be used in different makes and models

- a OEM part can even be used in different cars from different car manufacturers and then have different car manufacturer part numbers

Search for and identification of parts (numbers) is crucial to any spare parts business. Variants and tags are good tools, but handling dozens of necessary tags per part may be cumbersome and error prone.

IMHO a well thought data model and some ORM extensions seems to be necessary.
