Why is merging not allowed while POS sessions are open, and is there a way to make it allowed?

 Due to our data import we have a lot of duplicate accounts from our previous ERP.  Merging these accounts is currently only possible during late night or early morning, due to multiple retail stores in several time-zones.  I'm looking for a way to be able to merge during normal working hours.  Is this possible?
