Is there a way to set how long a helpdesk ticket should remain open without a response from the customer, before it is automatically closed?

in v15: 

Helpdesk > Configuraton > Teams 
scroll down to "Self Service" section > Automatic closing.

What you can do is to set an activity on the ticket so it would intimate you after the certain time and then you can close it by yourself.

Thank you, but this is more of a development solution. I was looking for a system setting - it seems to automatically close after 48 hours right now?

Don't believe there is any user level settings to close tickets automatically in helpdesk app.

Usman is suggesting to use advanced settings in technical menu to define and schedule the actions specific to your business / process need. You would need to be in developer mode to access this menu. (Settings > scroll to bottom Activate developer mode)
