My company purchased an engine which we are dismantling into individual parts. We would like to put those parts into inventory with their own serial numbers. Currently, we are doing a "reverse manufacturing" method, where we created a BoM "kit" type for the parent item (engine) and are adding the removed items as assembly parts for the kit. However, these items are showing "zero on hand", and I am not sure if the process I am following is correct. Please advise. We are using the community version of Odoo.

You would need to create a BOM for a part (e.g Engine block) with other parts as by-products and the component being the engine.
When you create a MO for the part, you would be able to record serial numbers for the part as well as individual by-products and record consumption of the engine.
Hello J N,
You can use the 'Unbuild Orders' under Operations menu in Manufacturing app to dismantle a purchased product.
To do this you will need to define a product ('engine' in your case) that is made up of different parts ('engine parts') under a BOM (bill of material).
After which you can create an 'Unbuild Order' for that product to manufacture the individual components as defined in your BOM.
Hope this will help you.
Thanks & Regards,
