what is a PAD?

stumbled over the term pad in several v8 Modules

pad_project
pad
note_pad

while note_pad is obvious the other 2 aren't. I guess it is a term every software developer understands just fine. Can anyone clarify?

The Pad refers to the * etherpad [1] * intergration modules*.*
