I might not understand your question properly, but if you are trying to add line numbers on a Sales Order we have used a 3rd party app.
Search the Odoo 3rd party apps for "Order Line Sequences/Line Numbers" and it is by Cybrosys Techno Solutions.
This has worked well for us
