In my opinion, the fields "customer rank" and "supplier rank" do not replace the checkbox. I think, the decisive disadvantage is that both fields are only triggered by actual purchasing or sales activities. But what if I create a new contact as a potential customer or supplier? And what if I want to search for these potential partners? We have reinstalled the checkboxes and wouldn't want to be without them.

In odoo 16 there have two new fields customer_rank and supplier_rank. If its value is greater than 0 we assign them as customer and vendor.

if the customer_rank > 0  = Customer

if supplier_rank > 0 = Supplier
