Hi,
Our company does around 200 new unique products per year that require it's own mold for the first order.

Once the mold is created sometimes we need to make several parts of it, but most of the times we only produce one part per each mold.
We need to store the mold with it's own reference and characteristics, even though they are very similar between them.

Should the molds be stored as a product?
If we handle products and molds as individual unique products we would have around 2.000 references in our product list and growing at a rate of about 400 every year.

We've tried to use generic products and handle the extra data of each one during the manufacturing process, but it's difficult to work with it as the description of the product is not displayed on the work orders. We would like to access to each mold data.

Does Odoo have the ability to handle the molds as tools or they have to be listed as products? Is it a good idea to have a product list of around 2.000 references?
Should we have to filter them some how to improve the handling of such a big list?

Thanks,
Dani.

You can use Storable Products. The number of product records are not a problem.  (I worked with companies with more than 30 000 products).  The key is to group in Product Category and have a naming standard, so search is easy.

Stock list will tell you what you have and where.  But the description in the list is still short, but you can save documentation and additional text to products.

They can also be manufactured, so you can have cost from material and work to create these.  And have value in your balance sheet.

But: You will have to use Stock adjustment or scrap when you need to get them out of stock.

And sorry: There no function in Odoo to tell what tool you need in a manufcaturing order.

Thanks Lars,

According to your answer we should make individual products for each order. Therefore I do also need to create an individual mold product because if I create them using a BOM that includes the mold they can not have a unique reference, right?

Then the process would be to create manually a new mold product once we have the confirmed purchase order, copying the data from the salable product and then create the Production Order.

Thanks again,
Dani.
