I am using the online trial version and when creating a new supplier on the 'Sales & Purchases' screen there is a field to assign a salesperson. What is the meaning of assigning a salesperson to a supplier? I'm kind of confused on what it actually means.

In companies where commissions are paid, this is the employee who gets the commission for this partner (usually more applicable for Customers). OpenERP supports a 'in charge of' contact - the person who is the point of contact in your company for that partner (applicable for both).
