how can I categories vendors into groups?
for example, I have freelancers in different majors I want to categories them based on their major. without modules

Yes, You can use existing field Tags for the same, You can add as many Tags as required based on majors of freelancers and same will be used on search filters.

There is a field Tags(category_id)
You can define in that field.
