is it possible for customers to create their own login to an online account where they can view their purchase history and save their personal details for buying through a webshop using the ecommerce module? if so, please let me know how.

For that you could use website_portal and website_portal_sale modules and a simple extension of the shop controller to ensure that the user is logged in before buy anything. To allow the user to create an account you need to activate it in the general settings. Also you need to edit the template user partner to set the sale account
