We are currently facing an issue with configuring Odoo to handle camera kit products that include both a camera body and a lens, each with its own unique serial number. Odoo allows us to create a kit by merging two products, but this does not link the serial numbers of the individual items within the kit.

Here is the specific problem:

  1. When we list a camera body and a lens as a single camera kit (which comes in one box), the camera body and lens are received separately in Odoo.
  2. The two serial numbers for the camera body and lens are not linked together in the system.
  3. We need a way to scan both serial numbers at once during the receiving process and link them to the camera kit product.
  4. We want to avoid receiving by scanning 100 camera bodies and 100 lenses separately, as each box will have a camera body and lens with their serial numbers indicated on it.
  5. Additionally, we need to accommodate the receipt of individual products in between the process without disrupting the workflow.

Example: When we scan the UPC barcode of a camera kit product, Odoo should recognize it as a kit and prompt for scanning two serial numbers: the camera body and the lens serial number. Conversely, when a non-kit product is scanned with the UPC barcode, only the respective serial number should be recorded.

We are looking for guidance on how to customize Odoo to achieve this functionality. Any advice on module development or existing modules that could help solve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jaideep,

Thanks for the suggestion on using the Packages functionality in Odoo. I have a follow-up question about how the serial numbers for the camera body and lens are linked when receiving multiple camera kits.

For example, if we receive 100 camera kits, each containing a camera body and a lens, we need to scan both the camera body and lens serial numbers one after another when the camera kit barcode is scanned.

How does Odoo handle this?

Example -

Expected - I have to receive 100 Kits. On the first Camera Kit barcode scan, Odoo should recognize it's a KIT and should assign the second scan (Serial Number) to camera body and the third scan (Serial Number) to camera lens and the process flow repeats for the rest 99 Kits.

Not - I have to receive 100 Kits. On the first Camera Kit barcode scan, Odoo recognizes it's a KIT and shows it's expecting 100 Camera Body + 100 Camera Lens. We then select Camera Body and scan 100 Camera Body Serial number. We later select Camera Len and scan 100 Camera Lens Serial number. None of these Body + Lens serial numbers are related. Although scanning these serial numbers while selling takes them out of the inventory.

When we scan the camera kit barcode, how does the system prompt us to enter the serial numbers for both the camera body and lens, and then link them together as part of the same kit?

I want to avoid having to scan 100 camera bodies and 100 lenses separately. Can you explain how this works with the package feature?

What I described is a concept of how you could potentially track your product and components through Inventory.

Your follow up question is specific to the use of barcode functionality. I haven’t personally used barcodes app so unable to assist with it.

Thank you for your response and the helpful links to the documentation. I appreciate your effort, but this information is not quite what I'm looking for. My specific requirement is to efficiently link both the camera body and lens serial numbers to the camera kit product in Odoo during the receiving process.

If anyone has experience with managing and linking product serial numbers for kits or has successfully implemented a similar process in Odoo, I would greatly appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Hi Veer,

If I were to break-up your questions ... Yes, it absolutely possible to record receipt of all components of a KiT while receiving multiples of that KiT product. I have updated the answer with screenshot. On the receipt operation you need to click detailed operation to do so. This is in line with the suggested solution where the package name is the KiT serial number with receipt operation manually updated and validated.

The second part of your question on how to accomplish this process using a barcode scanner, is the part am not aware of as I haven't used the barcode app. You want the barcode scanner to create a new package by scanning KiT product serial number and create product serial numbers by scanning.

My suggestion would be to set-up a test environment to test the use cases and create a new post specifically clarifying the barcode functionality.

A product can be tracked by serial number (Manufactured product - sl number of individual components can be tracked with traceability) or serial number of it components (KiT BoM) but not both.

From your description it seems like the lens and camera body are contained in a box which is tracked by a unique name/ barcode. 

This can be achieved in Odoo by using the Packages functionality. Enable from Inventory > Configuration > Settings - operations section

Package reference /name is printed out as barcode and if you use disposable box, on scanning the package its contents are added to the transfer. It is also possible to print package barcode with contents.

The product camera kit can continue to be a KiT. At the time of receipt a lens and camera body are put in a package tracked by a unique number.

At time of delivery package is scanned which would add the individual products to delivery order. You would also be able to move entire package.

Using Barcode: Basic you can just put then cursor in the field and scan the barcode. If the barcode reader is attached to your work station.
Installing the barcode app and create packages with this at goods receipt might be more efficient. You might also check out https://ventor.app/

Odoo function to create kits is in the manufacturing app. Basically your process would be to make goods receipt for cameras and lenses, and then create kits in the manufacturing app. That will ensure the traceability, a kit will be a product and you can sell kits.
