Not sure how or why, but this has resolved itself. I think it might of been because I added numpy and num2words via pip, but I'm not sure.
Have you created a custom report? In v8, account_check_writing doesn't seem to have a layout for US bank checks.

In trouble shooting this, this seems to specific to my Debian Wheezy install. I don't encounter this on my Ubuntu 12 installation.
