What is the purpose of the Hashes that appear on the certificate after signing a document?

Apparently it has nothing to do with the document hash. Is it a hash of the record to verify that it has not been altered? If so, it is quite useless.

It would be so easy to include the document hash as another field and thus anyone could verify that the document has not been altered.

Does anyone know what the purpose is of these Hashes?
