If you have products with thousands of configuration possibilities. Products you don't have in stock but purchase on order.

What would be best practise working with such a big configurable type of product? How would you deal with it? Would you use one product and put all the atrributes (about 10 with up to 30 options) to it? Or would you split the product into seperate logical build products? Keep in mind to get reports what configurations or combinations has been sold or offered. Any experience?
