Before anyone say anything, i must say that I hate internet explorer too. BUT our beloved chrome and firefox don't print in generic printers, only internet explorer do (they use image instead of text). So, how do you make openerp run in internet explorer to use generic/text only function in the point-sale? Thanks!

OpenERP 7.0 supports Internet Explorer 9.0 and superior. OpenERP will never again support older versions of IE and there is no way for you to make it support them without installing Chrome Frame.
If you really need to use an older version of IE in your organization, we strongly advise you to install Chrome Frame, which is a simple one-click install that can be launched from OpenERP. If your users do not have rights to install programs on their computers, Google also provides tutorials for administrators to deploy Chrome Frame on their network: http://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/chrome-frame-getting-started/chrome-frame-administrator-s-guide .
Some people have WinXP (I know, need to replace it), so I cannot install IE9 or higher.
They have IE8, and when you first go to the OE site, it will ask you to install the Google Chrome Frame.
There is no need to repeat that, I know that behavior very well since I programmed it personally. That's precisely what I say: when OpenERP asks you to install Chrome Frame, just click the 'Get Google Chrome Frame' button and everything will be fine.

Nicolas the whole problem of using any other browser than the dinosaurs versions of internet explorer is that they don't support printing on a generic text only printer and that is very important for a point of sale. I never thought in my life (i'm a web developer too) i would say that internet explorer is better at something, css for example is a nightmare when you're debbugging in ie 8 or prior.
BUT i've manage to find a solution and maybe that could appear on the documentation of the pos, USE OPERA. That's exactly what i said. When you use opera it works normally, when you simply press the print button it works like a charm and beyond that you gain customization of keyboard functions which helps accesibility. That's it!
If it helps for your problem, good for you. But keep in mind that Opera is not actually supported by OpenERP. It could work but we will not solve any bugs appearing in Opera only. If you have problems related to the point of sales, you could contact the person responsible of that module (Frédéric Van Der Essen) or ask a question strictly related to the point of sale. If you didn't know, the point of sale module provides alternative methods to print, without using the browser. Some search on this forum about the features of the point of sale should give you some advice on that subject.

The only way I can think of to do it, is to make a shortcut to IE with an argument. Such as iexplore.exe slashdot.org Would open up slashdot.org in ie even though my default browser is chrome.
Thanks Mike, but as I stated the problem is not how to use IE as the default browser or make openerp 'defaulty' open in IE, but how to make openerp run in IE versions prior to 9.0.
In that case your question should probably be "How do I get OpenERP to run in IE prior to version 9" instead.

If you're trying to move to Internet Explorer because it supports generic text only, don't do it. Try opera because it already supports that and it's a more up to date browser. Then you'll have to manually (depending on your printer model) configure where to stop printing, margins & etc.. Hope this helps someone.

Do you mean "how do I make IE the default browser in my Windows PC?"
No, it's not about setting IE as the default browser sorry if I wrongly formatted the question. What i want to do is simply run open erp in ie, because if you try to do it, a warning will ask you to install chrome or firefox and no matter what you do you can't run in internet explorer. I know OE wasn't designed to be used in internet explorer but I want to use only the front end of the point of sale, so i don't think it will have serious bugs, conflicts or anything. The purpose of using internet explorer is because it's the only broswer so far that supports generic / text only printers.
This warning should only appear on versions of Internet Explorer before version 9 - OpenERP supports versions 9 and above.
Ray Carnes is right. OpenErp works fine with IE9. There is nothing special required to run under IE9.
The problem is the machines in my business are using windows xp, therefore I cannot update to IE9. That's why i asked how to 'force' ie to run openerp.. any suggestions??
I think this will be difficult to do without help. Since Google dropped support for IE8 last year and it is used by less than 10% of users worldwide, others are probably not willing to invest in the effort.
Also, if OpenERP doesn't support IE < 9, there probably is a good reason for it.
Best solution: download chrome/mozilla browser and start to use openerp, because openerp developer not use IE a bit. Also IE have a lot issue and I also force to never us IE. Also right now you can fix some issue but to maintain it is difficult. Batter and best options is chrome/mozila.
