For names of persons, whether customers, contacts, employees, I wish to record first and last name. How can I work around this?

Have you tried installing "Partner first name, last name"
This module splits first name and last name on res.partner. The field 'name' becomes a stored function field concatenating lastname, firstname.
Find it at https://www.openerp.com/apps/7.0/partner_firstname/
Note: The concatenated name did not show up for me in list view when I quickly tested this module
