Same error here. Reported a few minutes ago, as soon as I have an answer I'll post it here.
Edit: Just reset template "New Portal signup" and voilá!

what version of Odoo do you use?
If you are using de community version in French, try to switch to English to test. And if it is working, you might want to check the email templates (in dev mode, "Technique", Modèles d'e-mail):
Some contains .e-mail instead of .email => that make crash the QWeb when used to send the e-mail to the newly created user.
