Currently I am trying out Tinymce and CKEditor html WYSIWYG editors for the look and feel of the reports, but it is for html and not xml. So some formatting goes missing. Is there something better to use?

Did you try with the internal WYSIWYG editor?
To give it a try , set your report to HTML on report type field and when called it will open in a new window. On upper left corner you will find a button for edit it.
When you've completed your work you can set the report back to PDF.
It's not the best solution but could help you.
