We wish to on saving an event autoamticly place an appoitnemnt in the calendar - i have set up the automated action but all we get is an issue with the date:
DataError: invalid input syntax for type timestamp: date_began
Any ideas?

It is almost impossible help you if you dont share the screen with the configuration you did.
Revision and/or Version of your server, web and addons is important to help you.
It is pretty obvious something "Data type problem."
You can, trace your variables, and show us the context and your test enviroment, "When do you receive this message?."

What's your expression for the field date_began?
Sure it is not date_begin?
Make sure the field name is right and you used right datatype (date or datetime) for suitable calendar attribute.
