This depends on the Odoo version. From version 9.0 on there is no financial year anymore. Please consult the official documentation for more information: https://www.odoo.com/documentation/user/9.0/accounting.html or check https://tutorialopenerp.wordpress.com/2016/04/28/odoo-8-accounting/ for version 8.0.
