Aren't there any sample databases available to explore the functionality in the demo? I know the question has been asked before but I don't find any answers ...

You can create an account at Odoo to test functionality with/without demo-data. You can login and have a look to several versions of Odoo at runbot.odoo.com (admin/admin).
