Hi everyone

I have a question about the data protection/data security of Odoo in the context of an upgrade.

Is it effectively the case that upgrades of Odoo databases must always be performed via https://upgrade.odoo.com/upgrade? Or is there a way to handle an upgrade independently of the Odoo Upgrade Service (e.g. for a sensitive, on-premise environments)?

What exactly does the Odoo Upgrade Service do and where is an alternative, independent way documented?

Thanks in advance for your replys!

Using upgrade.odoo.com is the official Odoo Upgrade Service provided by Odoo S.A. It’s the only supported method for upgrading Enterprise databases.

This service safely migrates both database schema and data, ensuring compatibility with the target Odoo version.

During the process, a copy of your database is uploaded to Odoo’s secure servers, where automated and manual scripts handle the upgrade.

The service is fully GDPR-compliant — Odoo guarantees data confidentiality and deletes uploaded databases after processing.

If you’re using Odoo Community Edition, you can perform the upgrade independently using the OpenUpgrade project from the OCA.

OpenUpgrade provides migration scripts that replicate Odoo’s structural and data changes version by version.

For the community odoo version, OpenUpgrade is the best open-source alternative to keep full control over your data.

You can find full documentation for OpenUpgrade on GitHub: github.com/OCA/OpenUpgrade

Enterprise databases must go through Odoo’s Upgrade Service, while Community users can handle upgrades independently via OpenUpgrade.
