Numbered headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) are part of the HTML structure used to organize content on a web page. Each number represents the level of the heading, and the hierarchy goes as follows:
- H1: The main heading or title of the page (used only once per page).
- H2: Subheadings under H1, usually for major sections of the page.
- H3: Subsections under H2, providing more detail.
- H4-H6: Used for further breakdowns, though they are less common.
Technically, there’s no hard limit to the number of headings you can use on a page. However, for good practice:
- Use only one H1 per page to define the main topic.
- Use H2s and lower levels (H3, H4, etc.) to logically structure your content.
- Avoid skipping levels (e.g., going from H1 directly to H3) as it can confuse users and search engines.
While there’s no strict rule, the design often defines that:
- Font consistency: Headings typically use the same font family but may differ in size, weight, or style (bold, italic) to indicate hierarchy.
- The largest heading (H1) should stand out the most, followed by smaller and less prominent subheadings.
- Using consistent styles across your site improves readability and makes your design cohesive.
