Greetings fellow Odooers!

I hit a major brickwall in my ODOO-Project. At the moment I'm trying to figure out what would be the best course of action for my companies workflow automation process. I came up with 2 concepts:

Concept 1: Everything takes place in the same Warehouse

This is my Companies Situation at the moment. We have 1 Warehouse. In this Warehouse we have a main storage location (with multiple sub locations), and storage locations at our workstations (All the workstations are in this warehouse, per example WS1, WS2, WS3, WS4). When a manufacturing order comes in the needed products should only be taken from the correct workstation storage location. Per example if I want to manucature a product at WS1 I only want to use the components at the storage location from WS1 (and not from the main storage or other workstation storages). I also want to replenish the components at the workstation-storage-locations if the stock there runs low. Once a product is finished I also want to determine were it is stored.

Since im very new to ODOO this concept seems to be very hard to realize at the moment. Would this concept even be possible with the use of routes or do I need to resort to concept 2?

Concept 2: Main Storage is its own Warehouse, each Workstation has its own warehouse.

In this Concept each storage location becomes its own warehouse. In this case the worksation warehouses (with their own reordering and storage rules) would resupply from the main storage warehouse and the main storage warehouse would generate RFQs if stock there runs low. I think this variant would be easier to realize but I would have to redo all storage location labels.

My question now is as follows:

Is concept 1 possible to realize? (If so how would it be possible, maybe you guys know of good tutorials i could use since I probably would need to work with advanced routings). If concept 1 is not possible would concept 2 be a good alternative or do you know of better ways?

Thanks in advance and sry for the bad English.

Any specific reasons to use V14? Current version is 16.3 and V17 is expected in a few weeks.

ODOO V14 was the version wich was installed at the moment I got handed over our logistics project. Some little changes via Studio (nothing serious, just some Table changes and Custom Documents) were already made. I also thought about upgrading to the newest version (for support reasons) but was afraid to do so because of the studio changes wich will probably be lost in the process. I'm also afraid of breaking the database. Up until now we used odoo to document our components and BoM's. Now we are building up the Inventory System and Manufacturing System wich probably will still take a while.

Yes, Concept 1 is absolutely possible in Odoo 14, though it takes some setup. You can keep a single warehouse and create separate internal locations for each workstation (WS1, WS2, etc.). Then, use reordering rules and routes so each workstation automatically gets replenished from the main storage when its stock runs low.

For manufacturing, you can configure pull rules so each workstation only uses materials from its own location, and define where finished products should be stored after production.

If you’re just starting with Odoo, Concept 2 (treating each workstation as its own warehouse) might seem easier, but it can quickly complicate reporting and inventory tracking. Concept 1 is cleaner long term once you understand routes and replenishment.

Routes, putaway rules and removal strategy is already support well enough to setup warehouse with many sub-locations of WH/Stock, and one or some product items (1-5 items) maybe stored in a specific sub location, on the purchase-receive and sales-delivery odoo already choose the sub location to store to or from sub location to pick/deliver from. In case of interwarehouse transfer with many sub location something like 1000, it is already not practical, because will need too many routes/rules needed.

Is there a practical way to make odoo can select the right sub-location per product in picking lines to suply interwarehouse transfer out like it was in sales delivery picking?

Yes Concept 1 is quite possible if the assumption is that an MO would be completed in only 1 work center (workstation). While in Odoo a work center is assigned based on work order operation and multiple work centers can be utilized in completing 1 MO.

In V14, on the miscellaneous tab of an MO you can provide the component location and location of finished product prior to confirming the MO.

If more granular inventory transfer operations are required, it can be achieved by activating 3 step manufacturing route from Inventory > Configuration > Warehouse

Below tutorial details the process

https://www.odoo.com/slides/slide/manufacturing-in-two-or-three-steps-2804?fullscreen=1

Replenishing stock at a storage location is possible by defining min, max and multiple qty for a product at the specific location. Trigger can be manual or auto and the replenishment route can also be selected. (transfer from main stock, or buy etc)

Inventory > Operations > Replenishment

Thank you for your quick answer. Gonna try this on my Test-Database.

Concept 2 - No don't.  A warehouse is a physical area with a fence around (normally) and it got an adress. So unless there are several adresses, do not create several warehouses.

Whenever you manage warehouses and locations, alwasy configure at according to the physical layout.

Concept 1: Yes this can be done with standard configuration. But it is a little tricky.  I tried to test a little. And came up with:

Divide your warehouse into two virtual location (You configure the locations as type View).  One of these are for manufaturing components.  You will a top internal location that can have stock (Let us name it Prod Area), and below that you set up your location for WS1 - WS4.  Manufacturing operation must have source location = Prod Area.

When you create your manufacturing order, it will look for components in Prod Area and the sub location you have below.

The View type Location is the header for all - let me call it General storage.  Under there you will have all your locations for storage of whatever.  This might also be the area for Destination location for the manufacturing operation.  You can use Put Away rules for how to find the best location for storage of finished production.

Replenish to WS1 - WS4:

Create a route like this:

The rules is what does the trick and set up like this:

On the prooducts you want to refill from storage to work center you select also the route Refill.  And then create a reordering rule like this:

One rule that say I will buy it and store in General Storage, and Min qty in stock = 500

Other rule say I will have min 10 in location WS1 (which is the one with Work center 1) and use the route Refill. Running either the Scheduler or if you use the Replenishement, will create an internal transfer to fill up the location.

I hope this helps you on the way.

Thanks for the hints and your quick answer! Will try this in my Test-Database.

The setup I describe might or might not support your flows. There are several depencies:
- Multi or single level manufacturing?
- Are any of these work centers using the same component?
- What i the physical layout of the manufacturing facility?

At least these three can have impact on your process.

About upgrade to V16:
There is quite a lot of new things in V16 from V14. I am currently in the process. Most likely you will loose all views modified wit Studio app. Fields and models might survive - unless there are links to fields no onger existing in V16.
Either redo those in V16, or get a programming consultant to create add ons. The latter is recommended. Studio is nice to quick customize for business needs. Buit it creates a mess in the code. We have decided to create proper add ons for what we want to keep. Future upgrades will then be easier.

You can try to run the upgrade to get a test database, and se what happens.

To answer your questions:

1.) Multi or single level manufacturing?
I guess this refers to if our Products are manufactured on a single workstation or across multiple stations. Most of our products are manucatured at a specific workstation. Example: Sub-product "PRO WS1 001" is manufactured from components at WS1. Once finished it is stored at WS2 as a component for another manufacturing process.

Only our electric components (like cable trees) are manufactured across multiple workstations at the moment. If needed we can change this.

2.) Are any of these work centers using the same component?
Yes. This is the case with most of our worksations. Affected components are screws, bolts etc... wich are needed at multiple worksations.

3.) What is the physical layout of the manufacturing facility?
Workstations are in the same warehouse where the main storage is. In my example components are drawn from the main storage to the workstations WS1, WS2 and WS3 where the sub products are manufactured. These sub products are send to WS4 where the final product is manufactured. The final product is stored in the main storage area.

For some reason I cannot attach my sketch of the workflow to this thread, sorry.

Thanks again for helping me.

I made a mistake in my answer of the first question:
Once finished it is stored at WS4 (and not WS2) as a component for another manufacturing process.
