I was wondering, in Odoo 8, is there a way to print orders to a specific printer WITHOUT POSBox? I have a USB printer that prints the receipts directly via the browser, can this printer not also print order for the kitchen?

It is possible using these modules but you must use ESC/POS Network printer

yes you can,
you need posbox if you use the print button via tablet or phone (posbox is use for hardware proxying)
if you using pc you can directly print it without posbox
