Hello all,

What is the best or most intended way to hide apps from users by their role? I want to create an HR group that can only see HR related apps, and other such groups for other roles, so that HR are not seeing stuff like Shop Floor and Manufacturing when they log in.

What I tried:

  • Created a group in Settings > Users, Groups & Companies > Groups.
  • Under Menus, added all the apps I want that group to be able to see.
  • Added a user to that group.
  • That user can still see other apps, and other users can still see apps that were added to the group.

Assuming that even as an admin user, I wouldn't be able to see things outside my group, unless I enabled super user mode? So I took this to mean it wasn't doing what I intended.

Thanks in advance.

Please look at this third-party module: https://apps.odoo.com/apps/modules/18.0/odoo_menu_management . It lets you flexibly configure the menu's visibility based on groups, companies, or even user preferences.

Thank you Yash Makwana for your answer. I will use the groups that came loaded with Odoo for now, that seems sufficient.

The behavior you’re seeing is expected — the Menus tab on Groups doesn’t restrict apps, it just adds extra menu entries. By default, users will still see other apps if they belong to groups that grant them.

In Odoo, each app icon is just a top-level menu, and visibility is controlled by the groups assigned on the menu. A user will see a menu if they’re in any group that gives access to it.

Best way to do what you want:

  • Use the standard security groups that come with each app (e.g. Manufacturing User, Inventory User, HR Officer/Manager). If a user isn’t in that group, they won’t see the app.
  • For your HR group, remove users from Manufacturing/Inventory/etc. and only give them HR-related groups.
  • If you need more control, you can go to Settings > Technical > User Interface > Menu Items, open the top-level menus (like Manufacturing, Shop Floor), and set the “Groups” field so only the intended group can see them.

Also note:

  • Admin users see more apps because they’re in many groups.
  • Superuser (developer root) bypasses all restrictions.

So the key is managing group membership and menu “Groups” settings, not the “Menus” tab in Groups.

Hi,

The following module helps you to hide the menu user level

* https://apps.odoo.com/apps/modules/18.0/hide_menu_user

The lower versions are also available.

Hope it helps
