In the dynamic world of hardware manufacturing, efficiency is everything. For Haply Robotics, a Montreal-based innovator in haptic technology, the challenge was clear: too many disconnected tools, too many manual processes, and too much time lost in managing data. Haply Robotics specializes in creating hardware that lets people feel and interact in 3D environments. Their flagship product, the Inverse3, is essentially a 3D mouse that provides force feedback, allowing users in fields like medicine and dentistry to train virtually and “feel” procedures without practicing on patients or cadavers.

Beyond medical training, Haply’s technology extends into robotics control, enabling operators to perform tasks like painting or assembly remotely, even from another country. This opens the door to safer, more efficient industrial applications.

The company’s roots trace back seven to eight years, when its three co-founders, all working in haptics and simulation during and after university, identified a gap in the market. They began by improving a competitor’s product to make simulations more immersive and realistic, then developed their own solutions to push the technology forward.

The Challenge Before Odoo


Before Odoo, Haply Robotics faced major communication and data control challenges. Processes were scattered across spreadsheets owned by different people, with no centralized permissions or version control.

At one point, the company was using close to 20 different software tools, including three separate systems for accounting, HubSpot for CRM, ClickUp for project management, and other specialized applications. While each tool had its strengths, they didn’t communicate with each other, creating a tangled web of manual data transfers and costly inefficiencies. Annual software licensing alone cost around $40,000.

Odoo: A Complete Operational Shift


Haply first discovered Odoo when a team member used it for an open-source project involving collaborators worldwide. Initially, it didn’t “click” for Kevin. But after seeing comparison videos between Odoo and other ERP providers like SAP, he explored further and was impressed by its flexibility and breadth of applications.

How Odoo Changed the Game for Haply Robotics?


 A tailored, integrated platform: Today, Haply uses Odoo.sh for hosting, an essential tool for managing multiple contractors simultaneously, and relies heavily on apps like Accounting, Appointments, CRM, Employee Kiosk, Helpdesk, Inventory, Manufacturing, Project, Sales, Shop Floor, Repairs, Quality, and Timesheets.

 Helpdesk: Faster problem resolution and happier customers. The Helpdesk module funnels customer inquiries into a central system where tickets can be assigned, tracked, and automated with personalized follow-ups. Weekly meetings review open tickets, ensuring rapid resolutions, even for small but impactful issues, like customers mistaking harmless ink transfer for scratches on devices.

 Project Management: Improved planning with better visuals: The Project module delivers robust task assignment, timelines, and accountability. By enhancing it with a third-party Gantt view, Haply made planning even more effective, boosting team adoption and collaboration.

 API Access: Real-time dashboards for total visibility: Through Odoo’s API, Haply created a custom dashboard displaying CRM stages, sales orders, delivery statuses, manufacturing progress, quality control stages, and shipping updates, all visible on a 75-inch TV in the office. This not only reduced internal questions but also cleaned up data within two days of launch.

 Barcode, Expenses, and Shop Floor: Practical wins for daily operations: Deploying the Barcode app with Android scanners is transforming inventory workflows. The Expenses app simplified submission by linking receipts directly to employees’ accounts. The Shop Floor module provides a clear, task-focused interface for manufacturing teams. 

 Efficiency gains in numbers: Odoo has reduced Haply’s software costs from $40,000 to about $20,000 annually. Tasks that once took three days due to email chains and spreadsheet access now happen in an hour. Investor reporting preparation dropped from 14 days to just 3. Clearer workload visibility allowed the company to hire two more manufacturing employees, directly increasing daily output.

What’s coming up for Haply Robotics


On the business side, Haply is expanding into new regions, tackling challenges like managing product variants for different regional certifications and launching a subscription-based software system.

In Odoo, the next step is integrating Git Repository data with the Project module, enabling project managers to track software development tasks in real time alongside other company projects, bridging the gap between engineering and management.
