Hi all, 

Is there a way to manage purchasing and manufacturing based on full lengths of bar stock without custom development? We are in Odoo 18. 

  1. This is the process we're aiming for:
  2. We sell aluminium window frames in custom dimensions based on plans/measurements
  3. Products on Sales Order have custom dimensions, so the BoM contains for example 4 products for aluminum profiles of a specific length. The operation to saw these pieces from full length bar stock is our first operation in the manufacturing process.
  4. However, we have to buy and inventory based on full length pieces. A separate tool tells us what amount of bars we have to purchase to be as efficient with our materials as possible.


We cannot manage our purchasing and stock by the metre, because with 2 1m pieces (Stock would be 2 metres) we cannot make a 2 metre window frame.

I'm aware we could cover this with custom development, but given that the entire environment is otherwise standard, I'm interested to see if there are solutions in Odoo 18 for this issue.

Hi Jasper,

does this mean you have a very specific BoM for the window frames?

I assume you can cut the length but can't joint the length.


Therefore, I would suggest you to create few products (you will more product of course)

Let's say to build a "Window Frames A", you requires a 2 metres Aluminium - let's call it "Aluminium Length2m". and here is the "workaround" to build the Aluminium Length2m is to consume an "Aluminium Bar" which the UoM and Purchase UoM is by metres.

With this setup, you will have

  1. 3 products:
    1. Window Frames A - Act like the finished goods
    2. Aluminium Length 2m - Act like the semi finished goods
    3. Aluminium Bar - Act as the Raw Material
  3. You purchase with Aluminium Bar
  4. You Craft the Semi Finished Goods before the Finished Goods
  5. Finally, you craft the Finished Goods

You can achieve what you want by this because you segmented the components for the MO.
