I'm trying to identify how many sales per month are to existing customers (have ordered at least one product in the past) and how many are from customers who are new, or have never ordered anything.
Is this possible using the standard reports/filtering?

You can do this using standard report/filtering, you need to customize 'Sales Analysis' report.
