Hello, I am new to openerp and I would like to take the first step in it.

I have installed Ubuntu, Eclipse, python and pydev.

Furtheremore, I have downloaded the SOURCE from this page (the third item on this page: https://www.odoo.com/page/download).

I can run the file openerp-server.py with Eclipse.

Now, I also downloaded the module from "http://thierry-godin.developpez.com/openerp/tutorial-module-creation-pos-modification-english-version/#LIX".

It is said that I only place the files in "\etc" and add the path in "\etc\openerp-server.conf" and the module will appear after running the file "openerp-server.py".

I tried to do it but I cannot get what I expected.

What should I do now?

Thanks.

Thanks. But the modules still cannot be shown. Here are the steps I have taken: 1) Copy the folder "modules-openerp" inside /opt. The folder can be downloaded here (please unzip it): https://www.dropbox.com/s/2tivo9k21tadnl2/modules-openerp.zip 2)sudo nano /etc/openerp-server.conf 3)add the sentece  "addons_path = /opt/modules-openerp" at the end of the file 4)/etc/init.d/openerp-server force-reload 5)Open Firefox: http://localhost:8089 6)Login 7)Settings-->Installed Modules-->Remove the filter "installed" at the top right hand corner Are the steps above correct? Anythings missing? Thanks.

Hello Frankie Chan,

Provided you have corrently set the "addons_path" option pointing to the parent directory where your downloaded module is located (it is used to specify "additional addons paths"), you will find your module listed and ready to be installed under "Settings > Modules > Installed Modules" by deactivating the "Installed" filter. This sections lists installed/available-for-install modules in your filesystem.

Your module won't be listed under "Settings > Modules > Apps", that section lists featured modules in the Apps Store.

As Kasper has already mentioned, you don't have to worry about compiling your OpenERP module. The Python interpreter will compile it automatically when you install the module from OpenERP.

If by any chance you are not sure if the "addons_path" option in the configuration file is taking effect, you can use the "--addons-path=EXTRA_ADDONS_PATH" command line option instead.

Regards.

Python compiles .py files into .pyc files automatically. You never have to worry about compiling Python (I've been using it for more than a decade and never worried about compilation, except when C, C++ or Fortran are added in the mix). And as far as I understood Odoo is only Python code.

If you did not already, you should follow the installation guide from the documentation:

https://doc.openerp.com/install/linux/
