Is there any way of accepting credit/debit card payments from the backend (ie either from Sales or Accounting) in Odoo9/10? I looked in the online store, there was nothing there. It looks like this may have been possible in earlier versions.

You need to build or purchase an add-on to handle this. You can find quite a few in the app store such as these ones which support Stripe (https://www.odoo.com/apps/modules/browse?search=stripe).
I already have a stripe module; its a payment acquirer only, only for web checkout. I'm looking for something that works on the back end as well.
You will need to build a custom module for that likely. I'm working on something sinimlar for the company I work for right now. It's can be done but not quick and simple.
I would also like to be able to charge a credit card on an invoice
If you are building a custom module for this, since it the functionality was removed in v8.0, it only exists in the customer portal (activated from Settings > General Setttiongs, and viewable via /my/invoices)
