Hello Odooers,

Please find me solution to this problem that why this set of putaway rules are not working. Whenever I make purchase of laptops2, all goes to Wh/stock ..Does this even work on odoo putaway rules linked with storage capacity..

Hello Furqan,

This behavior is normal in Odoo and usually means the putaway rules are not being triggered, not that putaway rules are broken.

Common reasons why putaway rules don’t work

  1. Putaway rules are applied only at receipt (incoming picking)

    • They work only when validating the receipt

    • They do not move stock automatically after it reaches WH/Stock

  2. Location hierarchy issue

    • Putaway rules must be defined on child locations of WH/Stock

    • If rules are set on the wrong location level, Odoo ignores them

  3. Product-specific rule missing

    • If the product laptops2 has no matching rule, Odoo falls back to WH/Stock

  4. Storage capacity is not a trigger

    • Storage category / capacity does not automatically redirect stock

    • Odoo does not re-evaluate putaway rules based on capacity overflow

Important clarification

Putaway rules in Odoo:

 Decide where to store during receipt

 Do NOT dynamically move stock when a location is full

Recommended approach

  • Define clear product-specific putaway rules

  • Ensure locations are proper child locations

  • If capacity-based redirection is required → customization is needed

if they dont move stocks by itself then what is the purpose of this rule, you havent tell me the correct explanation why it is not working, i should mention it works if i set one putaway rule with out defining storage capacity , tell me if storage capacity was not to prevent goods from accumulating in one location then what was even the purpose of setting this in putaway rule.......????????

This issue occurs because Odoo putaway rules are applied only after the product reaches the destination location of the incoming operation, not during the purchase receipt routing itself. When you receive the product, it first lands in WH/Stock, and only then does Odoo evaluate putaway rules to move it to a sub-location.

Key points to check:

    Ensure the putaway rules are defined on the destination location (e.g., WH/Stock), not on vendor or input locations.

    Verify the product, product category, and storage category match exactly with the rule conditions.

    If storage categories are used, make sure capacity and category constraints are correctly configured.

    Confirm there are no conflicting putaway rules with higher priority.
    Make sure the product is not using a route that bypasses internal moves.

In short, putaway rules do work in Odoo, but they only trigger after receipt into stock. If everything still goes to WH/Stock, recheck the rule scope, priority, and storage category configuration.
