First from your side you need to migrate all the used custom codes to v17 and then initiate the migration on staging branch. Once migration is done, verify if everything is okay, in case if you face any issues, you can create a support ticket for the same and odoo will assign a person for the same from the migration team. 

Once everything is okay and tested, you can initiate the migration for the live db, the process will take only 30 min to 1 hr, you will get an idea of time during the migration of staging.
