I am trying to find a way to automatically change the reference number on manufacturing order created from the original manufacturing order.
So when a sale is gone through, i want the items that are not in stock (that is to be manufactured) to have the same reference number as the original one, but to add -01, -02 and so on.

Im looking in the code for mrp production and cant seem to find where other manufacturing orders are created.

Yes but, its different from when a single MO has components that need to be manufactured, they also get created as a MO with the refrence number being the next number. Here i want it maybe it to be the same as the backorders.

If it do not have the reference from the original order (as I have shown) it is not a backorder. You must have a requirement that is not covered by the original manufaturing order.
But check operation (Inventory->Configuration->Operation->Manufacturing and check the setting for Backorder. If it is "Never", you will not hav backorders.
