Hello, everyone.
I use Odoo 16CE. I have a Red Metal product and I need to repaint it. So this is what I need to do:
Product = Red Metal
Component = Red Metal, Paint Remover, Red Paint

But, because I use the same product for the component, odoo error shows:
The component Red Metal should not be the same as the product to produce.

How to do it properly? Any ideas or alternatives? Thanks

In short: Repair process of items in stock do nota have support in Odoo. I have not found any third party app, that support this. From my point of view, management of quality issues in stock for a manufacturing business is insufficient. Except for the registration that can be done in the quality app. We miss: Quality mark on quant in stock, blocking for picking / reservation and rework with use of workcenter and replace / add components.

I'm working with a client who has a similar requirement.
They refurbish a product (remanufacture) and then sell it as a different SKU.

So what they do is have "Red Metal" (SKU Internal Ref = 1) and also "Red Metal (Refurbished)" (Internal Ref SKU = 2)
The refurbished product can have a BOM or it can be left blank, then during manufacture you have to manually specify the components.
It works but is a little cumbersome.

As their products are all serial tracked, we also make a note on the "Lot/Serial Number" record of the product that it is replacing (the previous serial number), for trackability in the future.

What if the product is not for sale but for internal use? For example, the Red Metal is for company internal use and not for sell

The same would apply but you would just manually generate a manufacturing order for the refurbished product SKU, instead of using a Sales Order with MTO or re-ordering rules.

Thanks, Chris. What if I need to include the service cost? For example, the components would be: Red Metal, Paint Remover, Red Paint, and Paint Service Cost (Service Type)

You'd need to manually include it on the BOM but it won't appear as a component on the MO. It can only be used to calculate the cost on the BOM of the finished product.
You can use a service product for overheads also.
