I want to generate Financial Reports based on both the GAAP and IFRS reporting standards.

One of the requirements is to sum balances from several individual accounts used in our GAAP report and shown them as a single balance in our IFRS report.

If I have five expense accounts under GAAP but wanted a single balance under IFRS how would I do this in Odoo?

I have been reading https://www.odoo.com/documentation/19.0/applications/finance/accounting/reporting/customize.html and it seems that perhaps I can tag the accounts and define our IFRS reports to group by the Tag?

The Line Grouping part of the documentation discusses creating a new field on the Journal Item but I am unsure if this is the correct approach and have not been able to create a Tag based field due to the error "Field x_tag_ids of account.move.line cannot be used in a groupby expression."

You are on the right track.

If you always use a single Tag and there is no calculation involved when you merge / sum balances this is a great solution.

Create your custom field like this:

Be sure to tag each individual GAAP based account with a single Tag to represent the IFRS rollup:

Then, remove grouping by account_id and replace it by your custom field on each report line on the IFRS report (which you can create by duplicating the GAAP one):

The GAAP report will show the individual balances:

The IFRS report will show the sum, using the Tag as the label:

When you drill down into the sum from the IFRS report, you will see the individual journal items and the source accounts:

If instead we tag the Accounts so our Journal Items are recorded like this:

The report would show this:

If you need to move balances between accounts at month end, automated Transfers can be setup using an IFRS Journal that is excluded from your GAAP reports.
