In the formula to calculate the shipping costs there is no option to calculate the price by the length of the item. Volume doesn't cut it because the length of the article together with its weight are what matters. Did anybody have a similar issue and how did you solve it? Is there, also, any module you'd recommend if something like this exists?

I am looking for the same thing. In other systems it's called "dimensional shipping", but Odoo lacks it by default.
