I have a question regarding product variants. 

We have been using Odoo Enterprise v11 for a year now, with the variants functionality turned off (due to several historic company process-related reasons). This means that instead of having the different colors of a device as a variant, all colours are individual product templates.

Now we want to start using the product variant functionality without losing all the sale history, reporting and notes relating to the products. This means we can't just create a new product template with variants and start over, but we want to convert the old product template to a product variant of a new product template.

Is this in any way possible without losing all the history related to this product without having to buy/commission a plugin in Odoo Enterprise V11?

I've tried this solution in v15 and I get import errors due to restrictions, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I hope it helps and would appreciate any inputs!

There's always at least one record on product.product - even if you don't have any variants. 

I found that if you add variants to an existing product (which previously didn't have any) the "dummy variant" record on product.product is archived but not deleted.  

So, if you change the archive flag to "restore" this record on product.product it becomes visible again and the sales history should all be there.   But that won't help you with merging product templates.
