Dear Experts,

We have created a new attribute with value records starting from 0.01mm onwards. The initial batch of 2,000 values was successfully loaded and appears in proper ascending order.

However, when we add a new record or import an additional batch of values (another 2,000), these newly added values appear at the top of the existing list, causing the sequence to become disordered.

We would like to ensure that any new values added:

  • Appear at the bottom of the existing list, or
  • Are automatically sorted to maintain ascending order

Could you please advise on the correct approach or setting required to maintain the desired sequence?

There is a sequence number on attributes and it is possible to "drag and drop" to change the order manually (though that won't be practical if you have thousands of attributes, so see below):

The changed sequence is then used when selecting variants.

To correct this you can export this and update through an Excel spreadsheet.  

You must select "I want to export data (import-compatible export)" and the fields value_ids/id and value_ids/sequence.  Note that although you can export the field display_name you must remove that before uploading because it confuses Odoo

Automatic sorting may be possible with an automation rule as described here (for a different use case)

Use the sequence Field

What is it?

Each Attribute Value in Odoo has a hidden sequence field that determines the order in which values appear.

How to Use It

A. Sort Existing Values in the UI

  1. Go to Sales / Configuration / Product Attributes.
  2. Open your attribute (e.g., "Length").
  3. Click the ⚙️ (gear) icon near the attribute values list.
  4. Choose "Insert a column" ➜ Add Sequence.
  5. Manually assign ascending values (1, 2, 3…) matching your desired order.

B. While Importing New Values

  1. Prepare your import file (.csv or .xlsx).
  2. Add a Sequence column.
  3. Assign proper numbers based on the order:
    NameAttribute ID (External)Sequence
    0.01mmproduct.attribute_length1
    0.02mmproduct.attribute_length2
    0.03mmproduct.attribute_length3
  4. Import through Settings > Import or via the Attribute form.
