I run a hair salon business with three investors who contribute capital at different times. For example, Investor 1 invested ₹50,000 in January and another ₹10,000 in May, totaling ₹60,000. Investor 2 contributed ₹30,000 in June and later ₹15,000, totaling ₹45,000. Investor 3 invested ₹25,000 in September and an additional ₹9,000, totaling ₹34,000. I want to know the best way to record, consolidate, and track each investor’s contributions properly in Odoo 18, ensuring that the total capital per investor is clearly visible in reports.

In Odoo 18, the best way to properly record and track multiple capital contributions from different investors is by using the Accounting module to create a dedicated equity account for each investor. Each investment can be recorded as a journal entry, crediting the respective investor's equity account and debiting the bank or cash account accordingly. This ensures that each contribution is tied to the right investor and the capital inflow is accurately reflected in the books. By setting up individual equity accounts, the system clearly separates each investor's total capital, even if contributions happen at different times.

To consolidate and track the investor contributions, Odoo's reporting features can then be leveraged. Custom or standard financial reports such as the General Ledger or Partner Ledger reports can be used to display the total amount each investor has contributed over time. These reports provide clear visibility into both individual transactions and cumulative totals per investor, making it easy to monitor and reconcile the capital amounts. Additionally, activating Developer Mode allows enhanced customization of financial reports, enabling tailoring of the format and data to meet the specific needs of the salon business for investor tracking.

Overall, maintaining separate equity accounts for each investor and recording each capital injection via journal entries in Odoo 18's accounting module is the recommended approach. This setup, combined with Odoo's dynamic financial reporting, ensures accurate recording, consolidation, and clear visibility of per-investor capital totals in reports, facilitating transparent management and easy monitoring of multiple investors' contributions in the salon business

We've recently upgraded from Odoo 16 and Odoo 18. We successfully used the method you mentioned above in Odoo 16 for 3 years. Now, after the upgrade, it seems "equity' accounts are handled differently--the balance is automatically rolled into "Retained Earnings" at the end of year even though it's a separate account although it's still showing on the GL. This is NOT what happened in 16 and the balance remained visible on the BS at all times. Any thoughts on this change in 18?

Hi,

In Odoo 18, you can manage investor contributions in different ways depending on how formal your accounting needs to be. A simple approach is to create each investor as a contact and assign them an analytic account. Every time they contribute, you record a journal entry that debits your bank and credits a capital account tied to that analytic account. This lets you run analytic reports to see each investor’s total.

Another option is to build a custom model or use Odoo Studio to log contributions directly, with fields for investor, date, and amount. A computed field can then summarize totals per investor, and you can design a dashboard or report to display consolidated capital. This makes data entry easy but requires some customization and doesn’t automatically handle accounting unless you link it.

For a more formal and accurate approach, you can create separate equity accounts for each investor. Contributions are posted by debiting the bank and crediting the respective investor’s capital account. This ensures that financial reports like the balance sheet clearly show each investor’s total contribution and is the best method if you need compliance with accounting standards.

In practice, the recommended setup is to maintain dedicated equity accounts for each investor so contributions remain transparent and auditable in standard reports. If ease of tracking is also important, you can complement this with a contribution log for quick visibility while still keeping accounting records accurate.

Hope it helps
