Noémie (Nemo) originally completed her bachelor of science in Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University in the USA. During her studies, she saw first hand the amount of food waste generated by campus events at large universities. Propelled to help remediate this problem through technology, she founded Free Food Alert in 2017. In 2023, she made the strategic decision to pivot the platform 100% to Odoo in order to drive the next level of growth.
During this talk, participants will learn about Free Food Alert, a tool built on the open source Odoo Community Edition (v16). Free Food Alert aims to decentralize the solution to food waste and hunger on university campuses through email alerts and mobile smartphone push notifications. Our tool allows any university member to send out a notification about free food to all other subscribers at the end of a catered event on campus. Since our launch in April 2023, members have sent out 250+ alerts across 5 universities serving more than 3,000 subscribers, with zero food safety incidents.
By using the Odoo open source code as a base framework for Free Food Alert, our team was able to accelerate the development of this tool and roll out to 5 universities in the United States in less than 18 months: The Johns Hopkins University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Endicott College, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and University of South Carolina Upstate. A live demonstration of Version 2.2 will be provided during the talk, including a walkthrough of new features such as: Multi-language support (English & French), university-specific host training, before & after photos to quantify food waste remediation, and automated host feedback surveys. The data insights available to university administrators in Free Food Alert empower them with information about trends in food waste and insecurity on their campuses.
