Every previous system I have used has part numbers with descriptions while Odoo has product name. What is the best practice for adding descriptions? Using the name for the part number and adding a description field? Or is there a better way?

Odoo supports an Internal Reference (number, code, sku) as well as a Product Name
There are several "Description" fields.
- Internal Notes (General Information tab) = description for Employees only
- Sales Description (Sales tab) = description for Customers only
- Purchase Description (Purchase tab) = description for Vendors only
- Description for Receipts / Delivery Orders / Transfers (Inventory tab) = description for Warehouse documents
Internal Reference: Part Number
Product Name: Part Name
Sales Description: Part Description
