In July 2021, Belgium experienced its most devastating floods, resulting in 39 deaths and affecting over 100,000 citizens, with damages nearing €2.57 billion. This tragedy highlighted the need for proactive measures against climate change, leading to the creation of the Center for Risk Assessment of Climate Change (CERAC) in October 2021. CERAC's mission is to assess and mitigate climate and environment risks, focusing on Belgium’s national security and resilience. It provides independent risk assessments and recommendations to policymakers to help them develop adaptive strategies. Additionally, CERAC emphasizes international cooperation and networking with similar centers to exchange best practices and address global climate challenges.
