You can write as following to set groups in user.

$info = ripcord::client('https://demo.odoo.com/start')->start();

$common = ripcord::client($url . '/xmlrpc/2/common');

$models = ripcord::client("$url/xmlrpc/2/object");

$uid = $common->authenticate($db, $username, $password, array());

$user_id = 1;

$group_id = 5;

$models->execute_kw($db, $uid, $password, 'res.users', 'write',

    array(array($user_id),array(

         'groups_id'=>array(array(4,$group_id))

)));
